When trying to motivate students in your math class, it’s helpful if they can see how it applies to the real world. Don’t you get tired of students asking, “When am I ever going to use this?” We know they need to know math for more reason than just to pass the tests, but they do not! Math Teaches you to think deeply and problem solve. It is our job to get them to do this.
When students begin to think mathematically, they are less likely to forget the material. A teaching strategy that facilitates the adoption of a new mathematical mindset makes math come alive for students. They can then use this problem solving mind set to solve other problems they cross in the “real world.”
Many students suffer under the misconception that an equation does not pertain to anything in real life. Searching for meaningful materials is not always easy. However, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NTCM) is a fantastic resource.
